[creative-radio] Radio Resource Pack - SADC Gender Protocol Media Provisions

RESOURCES FOR RADIO PRODUCERS

Broadcasters, activists, and all those interested in gender and media can
listen to interviews recorded at the 4th Gender and Media Summit. Producers
are welcome to use the interviews for their coverage of the GEM Summit,
progress report launches, and gender in the media in general. Produced in
collaboration with CMFD Productions and supported by FES, the Tune into GEM
Summit Protocol Radio Resource Pack includes downloadable audio files,
interview summaries, suggested cues, and background information.

To access the files and producers notes:
http://www.genderlinks.org.za/article/radio-resource-pack---tune-into-gem-su
mmit-2010-10-10

The SADC Protocol on Gender and Development, adopted by Heads of State in
August 2008, is a unique sub-regional instrument that brings together all
commitments to ending gender equality and sets 28 targets to be achieved by
2015. The Protocol calls on the media to mainstream gender in all laws,
policies, and training. As in other areas of decision-making, the media is
called on to make sure that there are equal numbers of women and men in all
areas and at all levels by 2015 and that they are given equal voice in all
coverage. The media is urged to challenge stereotypes and to be sensitive in
its coverage of topics like gender violence.

The Gender and Media Progress Study (GMPS) shows that there has been a
marginal 2% increase in women sources in the media from 17% in the 2003
Gender and Media Baseline Study (GMBS) to 19%. While countries with more
advanced media like South Africa, Namibia and Mauritius have remained
static, smaller and more socially conservative countries like Lesotho and
Malawi have demonstrated remarkable progress. Another positive sign is that
the proportion of women sources went up in hard beats that have been the
focus of media advocacy and training. For example, the proportion of women
sources in sports increased from 8% to 12%; in politics from 9% to 13%; and
in economics from 10% to 14%

It is against this background that gender and media activists gathered in
Johannesburg for the fourth gender and media summit in October 2010. Under
the banner, Gender, Media, Diversity and Change, trainers, analysts,
activists and practitioners measured progress against the provisions of the
Protocol.
